Exports in Western Africa
For the fourth year in a row, Western Africa recorded decline in overseas shipments of vaccines for human medicine, which decreased by -9.4% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 539%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, vaccine exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 351%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Senegal prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X kg), making up a 6.1% share of total exports.
Senegal was also the fastest-growing in terms of the vaccines for human medicine exports, with a CAGR of +53.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Ghana (+35.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Senegal and Ghana increased by +87 and +4.8 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest vaccine supplier in Western Africa, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 3.6% share of total exports.
In Senegal, vaccine exports increased at an average annual rate of +67.6% over the period from 2012-2022.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 24% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 52%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Ghana stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+14.7%).
Vaccine Imports
Imports in Western Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of vaccines for human medicine decreased by -7.6% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 148% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, vaccine imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 165%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Nigeria represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 56% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 27% share of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons), Niger (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Togo (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to vaccine imports into Nigeria stood at +16.6%. At the same time, Ghana (+17.9%), Togo (+13.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+6.4%), Burkina Faso (+5.4%) and Niger (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +17.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Mali (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+21 p.p.) and Ghana (+9.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Burkina Faso, Cote d'Ivoire, Niger and Mali saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -2.8%, -4.6% and -10.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported vaccines for human medicine in Western Africa, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria totaled +27.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+12.1% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+18.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 50%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+14.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
