For the third consecutive year, Western Africa recorded decline in shipments abroad of vehicles not mechanically propelled, which decreased by -34.8% to X units in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 45%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle exports declined significantly to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 23%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Niger dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2021. Cote d'Ivoire (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X units), Benin (X units) and Liberia (X units). All these countries together held approx. 31% share of total exports. Togo (X units) and Mali (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Niger increased at an average annual rate of +21.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+50.1%) and Ghana (+35.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +50.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Togo (-1.8%), Mali (-3.1%), Liberia (-23.1%) and Cote d'Ivoire (-25.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Niger, Ghana, Benin and Togo increased by +51, +8.1, +7.1 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest non-propelled vehicle supplying countries in Western Africa were Niger ($X), Liberia ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together accounting for 74% of total exports. These countries were followed by Ghana, Benin, Mali and Togo, which together accounted for a further 21%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Benin, with a CAGR of +58.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -14.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 22%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then declined in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per unit), while Niger ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, imports of vehicles not mechanically propelled in Western Africa contracted to X units, with a decrease of -5.5% against the year before. In general, imports continue to indicate a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle imports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 27%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest levels of non-propelled vehicle imports in 2021 were Cote d'Ivoire (X units), Senegal (X units) and Ghana (X units), together finishing at 56% of total import. It was distantly followed by Mali (X units), Burkina Faso (X units) and Liberia (X units), together achieving a 25% share of total imports. Togo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +17.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 56% of total imports. These countries were followed by Mali, Liberia, Togo and Burkina Faso, which together accounted for a further 23%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mali, with a CAGR of +21.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 5.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the import price increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
