In 2021, Senegal (X tons) represented the key exporter of wadding of textile materials and articles thereof, mixing up 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons), together constituting a 22% share of total exports.

Senegal experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wadding of textile materials and articles thereof. At the same time, Ghana (+36.4%), Nigeria (+9.7%) and Burkina Faso (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ghana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +36.4% from 2012-2021. In value terms, Senegal ($X) emerged as the largest textile wadding supplier in Western Africa, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 4.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Burkina Faso, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+39.8% per year) and Burkina Faso (+5.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 222% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a prominent increase. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Textile wadding imports skyrocketed to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 24% on the year before. Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +139.2% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 35%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

Cote d'Ivoire dominates imports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 61% of total imports in 2021. Mali (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 27% share of total imports. Guinea (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Cote d'Ivoire was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wadding of textile materials and articles thereof imports, with a CAGR of +30.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+17.7%), Guinea (+17.5%), Ghana (+8.2%) and Mali (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-12.0%) and Nigeria (-15.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea and Mali increased by +53, +2.5, +2.3 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Mali ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 78% of total imports. Ghana, Burkina Faso, Guinea and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Burkina Faso, with a CAGR of +35.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -30.4% against the previous year. Import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Nigeria (+15.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
