Wallpaper Market Size in Western Africa

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in the West African wallpaper market, when its value decreased by -6.1% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Wallpaper Production in Western Africa

In value terms, wallpaper production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 3.9% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Wallpaper Exports

Exports in Western Africa

In 2021, the amount of wallpaper and wall coverings exported in Western Africa declined significantly to X tons, with a decrease of -24.9% compared with 2020. Overall, exports faced a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 263% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, wallpaper exports declined slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 206%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Nigeria represented the main exporting country with an export of about X kg, which recorded 52% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Togo (X kg), Cote d'Ivoire (X kg), Ghana (X kg) and Senegal (X kg), together creating a 39% share of total exports. The following exporters - Mali (X kg) and Sierra Leone (X kg) - each finished at an 8.4% share of total exports.

Exports from Nigeria decreased at an average annual rate of -23.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+28.1%) and Togo (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +28.1% from 2012-2021. Sierra Leone experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ghana (-3.7%), Cote d'Ivoire (-11.4%) and Senegal (-19.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Togo, Ghana, Cote d'Ivoire, Mali and Sierra Leone increased by +11, +7.6, +5.7, +4.3 and +4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wallpaper supplying countries in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Cote d'Ivoire ($X) and Senegal ($X), with a combined 75% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Mali, Ghana, Togo and Sierra Leone, which together accounted for a further 25%.

Mali, with a CAGR of +36.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 29% against the previous year. Export price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, wallpaper export price decreased by -6.2% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 89% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+23.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Wallpaper Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2021, overseas purchases of wallpaper and wall coverings decreased by -20.7% to X tons for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 132% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, wallpaper imports reduced modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 73%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) and Ghana (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together generating 87% of total imports. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Togo (X tons) and Liberia (X tons) - together made up 10% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +41.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Ghana ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wallpaper and wall coverings in Western Africa, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Nigeria ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Senegal, with a 4.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ghana amounted to +37.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+12.9% per year) and Senegal (+43.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 134%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Liberia ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
