The West African market for welded and cold-formed sections of steel was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after two years of decline. In general, consumption showed noticeable growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of welded and cold-formed sections of steel, when their volume decreased by -12.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 325% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, welded and cold-formed steel sections exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 423% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Senegal represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 83% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), constituting a 15% share of total exports. Togo (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to welded and cold-formed steel sections exports from Senegal stood at +21.7%. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+44.8%) and Togo (+3.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +44.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Senegal (+64 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+14 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest welded and cold-formed steel sections supplier in Western Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Senegal ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire totaled +65.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (-3.4% per year) and Togo (+1.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, surging by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 72%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+14.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Western Africa

For the third year in a row, Western Africa recorded growth in overseas purchases of welded and cold-formed sections of steel, which increased by 186% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 358%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, welded and cold-formed steel sections imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 262% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Nigeria dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons) and Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (X tons) - together made up 8.5% of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the welded and cold-formed sections of steel imports, with a CAGR of +32.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+28.8%) and Cabo Verde (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (-8.0%) and Ghana (-16.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+68 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Cabo Verde (-3.5 p.p.), Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha (-11.7 p.p.) and Ghana (-48.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest welded and cold-formed steel sections importing markets in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X), Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha ($X) and Ghana ($X), with a combined 80% share of total imports. Cote d'Ivoire and Cabo Verde lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 11%.

Among the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +25.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -44.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 62% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
