In 2022, overseas shipments of wheat gluten decreased by -1.4% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 202% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wheat gluten exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 173%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the two major exporters of wheat gluten, namely Nigeria and Senegal, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Nigeria (with a CAGR of +41.1%).

In value terms, the largest wheat gluten supplying countries in Western Africa were Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X).

In terms of the main exporting countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +43.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 32% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, wheat gluten export price increased by +35.2% against 2019 indices. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Senegal totaled $X per ton.

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, overseas purchases of wheat gluten decreased by -26.3% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, imports, however, saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 293% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, wheat gluten imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 303% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 93% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Mali (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) - together made up 5% of total imports.

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wheat gluten imports, with a CAGR of +40.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mali (+17.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-2.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+60 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mali and Senegal saw its share reduced by -3.4% and -28.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheat gluten in Western Africa, comprising 95% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Senegal ($X), with a 1.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at +44.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Senegal (-0.3% per year) and Mali (+12.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 37% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
