In 2021, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in the West African wheat starch market, when its value decreased by -15.3% to $X. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 1,525%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wheat starch exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a significant curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 4,814%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then shrank significantly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Mauritania dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. Senegal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Mauritania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wheat starch. Senegal (-13.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritania (+96 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Senegal ($X) remains the largest wheat starch supplier in Western Africa, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritania ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Senegal stood at -14.8%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -98.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a significant decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 202% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mauritania totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (-1.8%).

Imports in Western Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of wheat starch increased by 33% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 691% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, wheat starch imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 1,425%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 94% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mali (X tons), mixing up a 4.5% share of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wheat starch imports, with a CAGR of +39.5% from 2012 to 2021. Mali (-24.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+94 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mali (-85.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wheat starch in Western Africa, comprising 99% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mali ($X), with a 0.8% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Nigeria stood at +58.8%.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 93%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Mali totaled $X per ton.
