The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Niger (X tons), Mali (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together accounting for 61% of total production. Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Guinea and Senegal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Burkina Faso (with a CAGR of +3.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Whole Fresh Milk Exports

Exports in Western Africa

After four years of decline, overseas shipments of whole fresh milk increased by 31% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a temperate expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 131% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, whole fresh milk exports amounted to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 157%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Gambia (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) represented the largest exporter of whole fresh milk in Western Africa, constituting 96% of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +55.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Gambia ($X) remains the largest whole fresh milk supplier in Western Africa, comprising 71% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cote d'Ivoire ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

In Gambia, whole fresh milk exports increased at an average annual rate of +21.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cote d'Ivoire (-1.2% per year) and Senegal (+60.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -16.9% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 45%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank rapidly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+18.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Whole Fresh Milk Imports

Imports in Western Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of whole fresh milk were imported in Western Africa; shrinking by -14.8% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, whole fresh milk imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mauritania (X tons), distantly followed by Cabo Verde (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Gambia (X tons) and Mali (X tons) were the major importers of whole fresh milk, together constituting 86% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Guinea (with a CAGR of +20.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest whole fresh milk importing markets in Western Africa were Mauritania ($X), Senegal ($X) and Cabo Verde ($X), together accounting for 50% of total imports. Ghana, Guinea, Mali and Gambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 32%.

Guinea, with a CAGR of +18.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Mauritania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Gambia (+11.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
