The West African woven carpet market dropped to $X in 2022, declining by -2.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Western Africa
In 2022, approx. X square meters of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings were exported in Western Africa; declining by -35.9% compared with 2021 figures. In general, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 182% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X square meters in 2021, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
In value terms, woven carpet exports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 80% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then declined markedly in the following year.
Exports by Country
Togo dominates exports structure, recording X square meters, which was near 80% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X square meters), creating a 6% share of total exports. Nigeria (X square meters), Senegal (X square meters) and Cote d'Ivoire (X square meters) took a minor share of total exports.
Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the woven carpets and other woven textile coverings exports, with a CAGR of +55.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+6.6%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Senegal (-3.8%) and Ghana (-4.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Togo increased by +76 percentage points.
In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest woven carpet supplier in Western Africa, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Senegal, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Togo amounted to +53.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (-5.7% per year) and Senegal (+4.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per square meter in 2022, increasing by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 74%. The level of export peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per square meter), while Togo ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+8.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings decreased by -2.3% to X square meters, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. In general, imports, however, saw prominent growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X square meters in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, woven carpet imports dropped to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 39%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Mauritania represented the key importer of woven carpets and other woven textile coverings in Western Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X square meters, which was near 40% of total imports in 2022. Mali (X square meters) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Guinea (12%), Cote d'Ivoire (11%) and Ghana (11%). Nigeria (X square meters) and Gambia (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to woven carpet imports into Mauritania stood at +12.7%. At the same time, Guinea (+37.9%), Mali (+33.7%), Gambia (+26.8%), Ghana (+23.1%) and Cote d'Ivoire (+12.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Guinea emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +37.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Nigeria (-1.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritania (+12 p.p.), Mali (+11 p.p.), Guinea (+11 p.p.), Ghana (+7.5 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+3.3 p.p.) and Gambia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Nigeria (-6.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Mauritania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported woven carpets and other woven textile coverings in Western Africa, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Cote d'Ivoire, with a 9.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Mauritania stood at +4.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+15.8% per year) and Cote d'Ivoire (+12.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per square meter, rising by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per square meter), while Mali ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
