In 2022, the West African flax fabric market decreased by -34.3% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, consumption showed resilient growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Niger (X kg) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Togo (X kg), Nigeria (X kg) and Mali (X kg). All these countries together took near 53% share of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2020 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +15.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest flax fabric supplying countries in Western Africa were Senegal ($X), Niger ($X) and Togo ($X), with a combined 80% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +44.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mali ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Niger (+156.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, Mauritania (X tons), distantly followed by Togo (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) were the key importers of woven fabrics of flax, together mixing up 83% of total imports. The following importers - Cabo Verde (X tons), Gambia (X tons), Niger (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Benin (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.

From 2020 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Niger (with a CAGR of +551.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest flax fabric importing markets in Western Africa were Ghana ($X), Mauritania ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 76% share of total imports. Gambia, Cabo Verde, Togo, Senegal, Benin and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Among the main importing countries, Niger, with a CAGR of +59.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -24.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 4.4% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per ton), while Niger ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
