In 2021, shipments abroad of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard increased by 22% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +30.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 30%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wrapping papers exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 29%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the key exporter of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard, comprising 47% of total exports. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Senegal (21%). Mauritania (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Cote d'Ivoire experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard. At the same time, Mauritania (+284.7%), Senegal (+16.9%) and Nigeria (+16.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Western Africa, with a CAGR of +284.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Ghana (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Senegal, Mauritania and Nigeria increased by +15, +3.8 and +2.2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Ghana ($X) and Senegal ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 90% of total exports. These countries were followed by Mauritania and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 6.1%.

Among the main exporting countries, Mauritania, with a CAGR of +253.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Western Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 24%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Wrapping Papers Imports

Imports in Western Africa

After nine years of growth, supplies from abroad of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard decreased by -6.3% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, wrapping papers imports declined to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Mauritania (X tons) were the main importers of wrapping paper, packaging paper and paperboard, together making up 91% of total imports. The following importers - Burkina Faso (X tons) and Togo (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Togo (with a CAGR of +26.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Senegal ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 74% share of total imports. Mauritania, Ghana, Burkina Faso and Togo lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Togo, with a CAGR of +19.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Western Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Burkina Faso ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Burkina Faso (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
