The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 20%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, exports of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers expanded rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +55.8% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 19%. Over the period under review, the global exports of attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In 2022, the United States (X units), distantly followed by Germany (X units), the Netherlands (X units) and China (X units) were the largest exporters of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, together making up 36% of total exports. The Czech Republic (X units), France (X units), Mexico (X units), Spain (X units), Poland (X units), Saudi Arabia (X units), South Africa (X units), the UK (X units) and Brazil (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +19.9%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and China ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 27% share of global exports. The Netherlands, the Czech Republic, France, Spain, Mexico, the UK, Poland, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and South Africa lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

Brazil, with a CAGR of +21.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average export price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers amounted to $X per unit, surging by 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +35.4% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Over the period under review, total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +64.0% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports of reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2022, the United States (X units), distantly followed by the Netherlands (X units) and Canada (X units) represented the largest importers of aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers, together constituting 27% of total imports. France (X units), Germany (X units), Austria (X units), the UK (X units), Belgium (X units), Italy (X units), Poland (X units), Spain (X units), Kazakhstan (X units) and Switzerland (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +20.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Kazakhstan (+28.4%), Austria (+10.6%), Canada (+8.2%), Italy (+8.2%), the Netherlands (+6.9%), the UK (+4.5%), France (+2.7%) and Belgium (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kazakhstan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +28.4% from 2012-2022. Poland and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-1.7%) and Switzerland (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United States, Canada, Austria and Kazakhstan increased by +12, +1.9, +1.8 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Canada ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 24% share of global imports. France, the UK, Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain and Kazakhstan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 33%.

Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of +15.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average import price for aluminium casks, drums, cans, boxes and similar containers amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Global import price peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while Kazakhstan ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
