Overall, total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +86.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the twelve major exporters of aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed), namely Russia, India, Mozambique, Canada, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, Iceland, the Netherlands, South Africa, Saudi Arabia and New Zealand, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +29.4%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, India ($X), Canada ($X) and Russia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 39% of global exports.
India, with a CAGR of +25.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average aluminium export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 39% against the previous year. The global export price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Iceland ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed) decreased by -0.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.
In value terms, aluminium imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +80.4% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the United States (X tons), followed by Japan (X tons), Turkey (X tons), South Korea (X tons), China (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main importers of aluminum (unwrought, not alloyed), together committing 64% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Mexico (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +15.2%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Japan ($X) and Turkey ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 34% of global imports. South Korea, Germany, China, the Netherlands, Italy, Thailand, Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia, Mexico and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +15.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average aluminium import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 40%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
