The global antibiotic market contracted to $X in 2021, which is down by -11.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the global market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, antibiotic production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 22% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, global production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, global exports of antibiotics dropped slightly to X tons, waning by -1.8% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, antibiotic exports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 3.6%. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

China prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 65% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by India (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons), together committing a 19% share of total exports. The United States (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Bulgaria (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of antibiotics. At the same time, Bulgaria (+13.4%) and the Netherlands (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bulgaria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +13.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, India (-1.5%), the United States (-2.2%), Spain (-2.9%) and Italy (-6.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+12 p.p.), the Netherlands (+1.8 p.p.) and Bulgaria (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest antibiotic supplier worldwide, comprising 42% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Italy ($X), with an 8.9% share of global exports. It was followed by India, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +4.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+1.1% per year) and India (-1.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average antibiotic export price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 69% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+8.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports

Global antibiotic imports contracted to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -5.8% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 2.6%. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, antibiotic imports contracted to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 9.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

India represented the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 24% of total imports. Brazil (X tons) held a 6.4% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by the Netherlands (5.7%). Spain (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Italy (X tons), the United States (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), the UK (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+12.6%), Bangladesh (+8.1%), Thailand (+2.8%) and Brazil (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2012-2021. Belgium and the Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.5%), Vietnam (-2.1%), Italy (-2.3%), Spain (-2.6%), the UK (-8.8%) and the United States (-11.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the UK and the United States saw its share reduced by -2% and -5.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X), Italy ($X) and the United States ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 30% of global imports. These countries were followed by the Netherlands, Brazil, Spain, Belgium, Vietnam, the UK, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia and Nigeria, which together accounted for a further 24%.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +11.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average antibiotic import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
