The global stationery market contracted slightly to $X in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption recorded a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 2.7%. Over the period under review, the global market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) represented the key exporter of articles of stationery, comprising 42% of total exports. India (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together held near 18% share of total exports. The following exporters - Germany (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Poland (X tons), France (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) - together made up 20% of total exports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of articles of stationery. At the same time, Poland (+8.6%), India (+7.1%), Vietnam (+3.2%) and the Netherlands (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +8.6% from 2012-2022. Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Czech Republic (-1.3%), France (-2.3%), Germany (-3.1%), Malaysia (-3.7%) and Mexico (-5.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+5.7 p.p.), China (+2.6 p.p.) and Poland (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Mexico saw its share reduced by -2.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest stationery supplier worldwide, comprising 44% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 5.9% share of global exports. It was followed by India, with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +3.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (-0.2% per year) and India (+9.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average stationery export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 7.9%. The global export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to stationery imports into the United States stood at +3.2%. At the same time, Nigeria (+32.3%), the Netherlands (+2.5%), Spain (+2.3%) and France (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +32.3% from 2012-2022. Germany, the UK and Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Australia (-4.9%) and Japan (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The United States (+6.1 p.p.) and Nigeria (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported articles of stationery worldwide, comprising 23% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 7.3% share of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 6.6% share.

In the United States, stationery imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+1.3% per year) and the UK (+0.2% per year).
