In 2022, the global asbestos market increased by 7.8% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption recorded a pronounced curtailment. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Asbestos Production

In value terms, asbestos production totaled $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 2.3%. Over the period under review, global production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Global asbestos exports expanded rapidly to X tons in 2022, picking up by 7.6% compared with 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asbestos exports rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Russia represented the key exporter of asbestoses in the world, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2022. Kazakhstan (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Brazil (18%). China (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to asbestos exports from Russia stood at -3.4%. At the same time, Brazil (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +2.7% from 2012-2022. Kazakhstan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-7.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Brazil (+6.7 p.p.) and Kazakhstan (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of China (-2.3 p.p.) and Russia (-9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Russia ($X), Brazil ($X) and Kazakhstan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 95% of global exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Kazakhstan, with a CAGR of -0.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The average asbestos export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 5.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (-0.2%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of asbestoses increased by 2.5% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 21%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asbestos imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) represented the key importer of asbestoses, creating 41% of total imports. China (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Uzbekistan (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together took near 38% share of total imports. Thailand (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons) and Tajikistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to asbestos imports into India stood at -1.0%. At the same time, Tajikistan (+66.5%), Bangladesh (+25.3%) and Uzbekistan (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tajikistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +66.5% from 2012-2022. China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-4.1%), Thailand (-4.9%), Sri Lanka (-5.2%) and Vietnam (-9.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan, China, Bangladesh, India and Tajikistan increased by +11, +2.6, +2.5, +2.4 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported asbestoses worldwide, comprising 54% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 11% share of global imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 10% share.

In India, asbestos imports declined by an average annual rate of -2.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (-2.0% per year) and Indonesia (-5.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average asbestos import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.4%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
