In 2022, the global average yield of bambara beans expanded to X kg per ha, increasing by 4.7% on the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Myanmar was the major exporter of bambara beans in the world, with the volume of exports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 38% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Rwanda (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Malawi (X tons) and Argentina (X tons), together constituting a 45% share of total exports. The following exporters - Ethiopia (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.9% share of total exports.
Myanmar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of bambara beans. At the same time, Brazil (+83.8%), Rwanda (+70.8%), Argentina (+43.7%), Malawi (+27.2%), Madagascar (+9.4%) and Ethiopia (+5.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brazil emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +83.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Myanmar, Rwanda, Madagascar, Malawi, Argentina, Brazil and Ethiopia increased by +38, +17, +11, +8.8, +4.9, +2.8 and +2.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Myanmar ($X), Malawi ($X) and Madagascar ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 65% of global exports. Brazil, Argentina, Rwanda and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 21%.
Among the main exporting countries, Brazil, with a CAGR of +88.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average bambara bean export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of bambara beans increased by 26% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, saw a deep setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 251%. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, bambara bean imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons), distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), the United States (X tons), the Dominican Republic (X tons), India (X tons), Lebanon (X tons) and Yemen (X tons) were the major importers of bambara beans, together comprising 68% of total imports. Botswana (X tons), the UK (X tons), South Africa (X tons), El Salvador (X tons), Venezuela (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +123.9%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), the United States ($X) and the Dominican Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 38% of global imports. China, India, the UK, Venezuela, Lebanon, El Salvador, Yemen, South Africa, Nepal and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
Among the main importing countries, Venezuela, with a CAGR of +104.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average bambara bean import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Venezuela ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
