The global benzene market declined to $X in 2022, falling by -5.3% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then shrank in the following year.
Benzene Production
In value terms, benzene production shrank slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 16%. Global production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of benzene increased by 2.8% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, benzene exports reached $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 102%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Korea (X tons), distantly followed by India (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Brunei Darussalam (X tons) represented the main exporters of benzene, together achieving 66% of total exports. Thailand (X tons), the UK (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Oman (X tons), Poland (X tons) and Canada (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Oman (with a CAGR of +22.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest benzene supplying countries worldwide were South Korea ($X), India ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), together accounting for 52% of global exports. Germany, Japan, Brunei Darussalam, Thailand, Belgium, the UK, Malaysia, Poland, Canada and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
Oman, with a CAGR of +18.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average benzene export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 9.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 64%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+0.2%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Benzene Imports
Imports
In 2022, global benzene imports declined to X tons, with a decrease of -8.9% on 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, benzene imports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 105%. Global imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
China represented the main importer of benzene in the world, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 38% of total imports in 2022. The United States (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons). All these countries together held near 38% share of total imports. Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons), France (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the benzene imports, with a CAGR of +22.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Portugal (+4.5%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.0%) and Italy (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Belgium, France, the United States, the Netherlands and Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Germany (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+31 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the United States saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -2.5%, -2.5% and -4.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported benzene worldwide, comprising 37% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 15% share of global imports. It was followed by Belgium, with a 9.2% share.
In China, benzene imports expanded at an average annual rate of +20.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (-1.9% per year) and Belgium (-1.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average benzene import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 9.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 67% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+0.3%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
