In value terms, book and brochure production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 36%. Global production peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Global book and brochure exports contracted to X units in 2022, waning by -8.2% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, book and brochure exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
In 2022, China (X units), distantly followed by Italy (X units), Germany (X units), the United States (X units), the UK (X units), Hong Kong SAR (X units), Poland (X units) and Spain (X units) were the largest exporters of books, brochures and similar printed matter, together mixing up 62% of total exports. The following exporters - the Czech Republic (X units), Slovakia (X units), France (X units), Belgium (X units) and Malaysia (X units) - together made up 12% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to book and brochure exports from China stood at -2.2%. At the same time, Poland (+8.6%) and Slovakia (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +8.6% from 2012-2022. Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.5%), Italy (-1.7%), Malaysia (-2.2%), Spain (-2.3%), Germany (-2.9%), the UK (-3.9%), the Czech Republic (-4.5%), the United States (-6.0%) and Hong Kong SAR (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Poland (+3.4 p.p.), China (+1.8 p.p.) and Slovakia (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the United States and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -2.3% and -8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($X), the UK ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 36% share of global exports. Germany, Poland, France, Italy, Hong Kong SAR, Spain, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Slovakia and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +22.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average book and brochure export price amounted to $X per unit, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 8.6% against the previous year. The global export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per unit), while Slovakia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+13.1%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of books, brochures and similar printed matter increased by 2.6% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, book and brochure imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The United States represented the largest importer of books, brochures and similar printed matter in the world, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was near 28% of total imports in 2022. France (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the UK (X units) and Germany (X units). All these countries together held near 23% share of total imports. The following importers - Hong Kong SAR (X units), Poland (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Italy (X units), Austria (X units), Spain (X units), Belgium (X units) and Switzerland (X units) - together made up 18% of total imports.
The United States was also the fastest-growing in terms of the books, brochures and similar printed matter imports, with a CAGR of +10.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Poland (+7.4%) and Italy (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Germany and Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-2.0%), the Netherlands (-2.5%), Austria (-2.5%), Switzerland (-3.8%), the UK (-4.6%), Belgium (-5.4%) and Hong Kong SAR (-13.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United States (+20 p.p.) and Germany (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of the UK (-2.4 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-9.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and the UK ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 34% share of global imports. France, Poland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Hong Kong SAR, Austria, Spain, Belgium and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
Poland, with a CAGR of +19.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average book and brochure import price amounted to $X per unit, waning by -6.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 5.1% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per unit), while the United States ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
