The global bottled water market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, declining by -1.8% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bottled water production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, the total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +1.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 24%. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of bottled waters decreased by -0.6% to X litres for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 2,717%. The global exports peaked at X litres in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

In value terms, bottled water exports stood at $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 9.7%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from China (X litres), together amounting to 97% of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bottled waters exports, with a CAGR of +101.8% from 2012 to 2022. China (+94 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest bottled water supplier worldwide.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +4.1%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average bottled water export price amounted to less than $X per litre, growing by 2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a sharp shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the average export price increased by 29%. The global export price peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for China.

In 2022, the amount of bottled waters imported worldwide declined modestly to X litres, falling by -1.9% against 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 426%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X litres. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of global imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bottled water imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 9.5%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Macao SAR dominates imports structure, recording X litres, which was near 76% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Poland (X litres) and the Netherlands (X litres), together committing a 12% share of total imports. France (X litres) took a minor share of total imports.

Macao SAR experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of bottled waters. At the same time, Poland (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +4.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-1.3%) and France (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Macao SAR (+3.7 p.p.) and Poland (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while France saw its share reduced by -4.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X), France ($X) and Macao SAR ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 9.1% of global imports. These countries were followed by Poland, which accounted for a further 0.3%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Poland, with a CAGR of +5.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average bottled water import price amounted to less than $X per litre, growing by 8.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a pronounced expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 433%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2018 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per litre), while Macao SAR (less than $X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+17.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
