Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 22%. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cadmium exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 54%. The global exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Korea was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 27% of total exports. Japan (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kazakhstan (10%), Canada (9.7%) and France (4.9%). Russia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Peru (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cadmium exports from South Korea stood at -2.0%. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+74.3%), Uzbekistan (+11.8%), Japan (+9.7%), Hong Kong SAR (+6.2%), Kazakhstan (+5.0%), Canada (+2.9%), Germany (+2.3%) and Belgium (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +74.3% from 2012-2022. France experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Peru (-2.8%), the Netherlands (-4.3%) and Russia (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Japan (+7.2 p.p.), Kazakhstan (+4.5 p.p.), Canada (+3.1 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+3 p.p.) and Uzbekistan (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-1.9 p.p.) and South Korea (-2.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the largest cadmium supplier worldwide, comprising 23% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Canada ($X), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Korea was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Canada (+2.1% per year) and Japan (+7.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cadmium export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.2% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cadmium export price increased by +13.2% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 49% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. For the third consecutive year, the global market recorded decline in supplies from abroad of cadmium and articles thereof, which decreased by -20.8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cadmium imports declined significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 48%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

India represented the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 62% of total imports. Belgium (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Sweden (7.9%). Hong Kong SAR (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Russia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cadmium imports into India stood at +29.3%. At the same time, the Netherlands (+37.5%), Russia (+10.6%) and the United States (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Netherlands emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +37.5% from 2012-2022. Sweden experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-5.9%) and Belgium (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+59 p.p.), the Netherlands (+2.4 p.p.) and Sweden (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Belgium saw its share reduced by -4.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cadmium and articles thereof worldwide, comprising 57% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 7.4% share of global imports. It was followed by Sweden, with a 7.3% share.

In India, cadmium imports expanded at an average annual rate of +29.5% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-6.3% per year) and Sweden (-2.0% per year).

In 2022, the average cadmium import price amounted to $X per ton, approximately mirroring the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern.
