In value terms, paperboard case material exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +26.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Germany (X tons) and the United States (X tons) represented roughly 32% of total exports in 2022. Sweden (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 6% share, followed by France (5%) and Poland (4.5%). The following exporters - Russia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Canada (X tons), Finland (X tons), Austria (X tons), Japan (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Spain (X tons) - together made up 27% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Japan (with a CAGR of +30.9%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and Sweden ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 39% of global exports. France, Poland, Canada, Finland, the Netherlands, Austria, Russia, Japan, Spain and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Japan, with a CAGR of +19.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average paperboard case material export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 14% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 34%. The global export price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+4.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After ten years of growth, overseas purchases of paperboard case materials decreased by -3.1% to X tons in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +57.4% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 16%. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, paperboard case material imports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +33.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 37%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In 2022, China (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons) represented the major importers of paperboard case materials, together making up 35% of total imports. Mexico (X tons), France (X tons), the UK (X tons), the United States (X tons), Spain (X tons), Canada (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and the Czech Republic (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the paperboard case materials imports, with a CAGR of +23.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the United States (+6.3%), Poland (+6.0%), the Czech Republic (+5.0%), Mexico (+4.8%), Italy (+4.7%), the Netherlands (+3.5%), Canada (+3.4%), Spain (+2.9%), the UK (+2.5%), Germany (+1.8%) and France (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Belgium (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+13 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of France (-1.5 p.p.), Germany (-2.3 p.p.) and Belgium (-3.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest paperboard case material importing markets worldwide were China ($X), Italy ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 26% share of global imports.
