The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, chemical contraceptive preparations imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by Belgium (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) represented the largest importers of chemical contraceptive preparations based on hormones or spermicides, together committing 32% of total imports. Imports into the United States increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Nigeria (+73.6%), Vietnam (+19.5%), Belgium (+12.0%), South Africa (+6.3%), France (+5.8%), Algeria (+3.6%) and Germany (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +73.6% from 2012-2021. Russia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ethiopia (-1.3%), the Philippines (-2.7%), Brazil (-2.9%) and Canada (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Nigeria, the United States, Belgium and Vietnam increased by +6.7, +5.8, +4.2 and +2.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported chemical contraceptive preparations based on hormones or spermicides worldwide, comprising 40% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 3.5% share of global imports. It was followed by Canada, with a 3.2% share.
In the United States, chemical contraceptive preparations imports increased at an average annual rate of +7.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (-3.6% per year) and Canada (-4.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
