In 2022, the amount of chicory exported worldwide shrank sharply to X tons, falling by -19.3% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 295% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chicory exports declined sharply to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Belgium (X tons), Poland (X tons), Hungary (X tons), France (X tons) and India (X tons) represented the major exporter of chicory in the world, creating 88% of total export. It was distantly followed by the Netherlands (X tons), mixing up a 4.8% share of total exports. Germany (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Hungary (with a CAGR of +629.3%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Hungary ($X) emerged as the largest chicory supplier worldwide, comprising 42% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with a 16% share of global exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 14% share.

In Hungary, chicory exports expanded at an average annual rate of +475.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+228.6% per year) and Poland (+59.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average chicory export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 3.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 41%. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Hungary ($X per ton), while France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Poland (+2.0%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Chicory Imports

For the fourth year in a row, the global market recorded growth in purchases abroad of chicory, which increased by 9.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 106%. Global imports peaked in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chicory imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of chicory, namely Yemen, the United States and Russia, represented more than third of total import. Switzerland (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.3% share, followed by Germany (6.9%), Spain (6.8%), Hungary (4.9%), Italy (4.7%) and the Netherlands (4.6%). The following importers - the UK (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Australia (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) - each accounted for a 13% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Hungary (with a CAGR of +149.5%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest chicory importing markets worldwide were Spain ($X), the United States ($X) and Russia ($X), together accounting for 35% of global imports. Switzerland, the Netherlands, Taiwan (Chinese), Germany, Italy, Yemen, Australia, Hungary, the UK and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 48%.

Hungary, with a CAGR of +164.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average chicory import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. In general, the import price showed a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while Yemen ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
