In 2022, the global chromates market increased by 32% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, chromates production rose remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a mild setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates, generating 60% of total exports. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Kazakhstan (15%). The following exporters - China (X tons) and India (X tons) - together made up 4.3% of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates exports, with a CAGR of +6.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, China (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, India (-2.0%), Kazakhstan (-4.2%) and Russia (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +37 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest chromates supplier worldwide, comprising 51% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Russia ($X), with a 14% share of global exports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with a 10% share.

In South Africa, chromates exports expanded at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (-9.1% per year) and Kazakhstan (-5.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average chromates export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 36% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+0.7%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Global chromates imports fell slightly to X tons in 2022, waning by -1.6% compared with 2021. Overall, imports saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 15%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, chromates imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a perceptible decline. Global imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Germany was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 28% of total imports. Estonia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Japan (12%), China (7%), Uruguay (6.9%) and India (4.6%). The following importers - Romania (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Austria (X tons), the United States (X tons), France (X tons) and Italy (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.

Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of chromates, dichromates and peroxochromates. At the same time, Austria (+12.8%), Romania (+9.1%), the United States (+7.5%), Thailand (+3.7%) and Estonia (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Austria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +12.8% from 2012-2022. Uruguay and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-2.3%), India (-4.0%), Brazil (-4.1%), France (-7.5%) and Italy (-12.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Germany (+5.9 p.p.), Estonia (+3.6 p.p.), Japan (+2.5 p.p.), Romania (+2.2 p.p.), Austria (+2 p.p.), Uruguay (+1.8 p.p.) and the United States (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while France and Italy saw its share reduced by -1.8% and -3.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

The second position in the ranking was held by Japan ($X), with a 12% share of global imports. It was followed by Uruguay, with a 9.2% share.

In Germany, chromates imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (-1.1% per year) and Uruguay (+5.3% per year).
