The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, common clay exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 27%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Germany was the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 34% of total exports. India (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United States (8.2%), Portugal (7.2%), Spain (7.1%) and Turkey (4.9%). The Netherlands (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), France (X tons), the UK (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
Exports from Germany decreased at an average annual rate of -2.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Turkey (+34.3%), India (+30.2%), Portugal (+11.4%), Thailand (+9.1%), France (+6.1%), the Czech Republic (+5.8%), Senegal (+2.3%) and the UK (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +34.3% from 2012-2022. The Netherlands and the United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.8%) and Spain (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India, Turkey and Portugal increased by +12, +4.6 and +4.4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest common clay supplying countries worldwide were the United States ($X), Spain ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 53% share of global exports. India, the Netherlands, France, Portugal, Senegal, Malaysia, Thailand, the UK, Turkey and the Czech Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 37%.
India, with a CAGR of +20.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average common clay export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -10.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 9.7%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 16%. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, common clay imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Italy represented the largest importer of common clay in the world, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 31% of total imports in 2022. Belgium (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (4.7%). The following importers - the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), Canada (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Poland (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), the UK (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Japan (X tons) - together made up 31% of total imports.
Imports into Italy decreased at an average annual rate of -2.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Spain (+23.6%), Mexico (+18.4%), Bangladesh (+11.8%), Indonesia (+7.1%), Poland (+1.7%) and Canada (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +23.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Japan (-1.1%), the UK (-1.2%), Belgium (-1.7%), France (-2.9%), Turkey (-8.1%) and the Netherlands (-8.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Spain, Bangladesh, Mexico and Indonesia increased by +3.7, +2.9, +2.8 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported common clay worldwide, comprising 18% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 6.9% share of global imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 6.1% share.
In Italy, common clay imports increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+8.9% per year) and Spain (+21.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average common clay import price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%.
