After two years of growth, the global market for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -6.2% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the global market attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 18%. Over the period under review, global production of attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

India (X tons) remains the largest coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre producing country worldwide, accounting for 42% of total volume. Moreover, production of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Sri Lanka (X tons), threefold. Indonesia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in India was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Sri Lanka (+1.3% per year) and Indonesia (-1.5% per year).

The global average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres fell to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -2.1% on the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 9.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average yield of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the global harvested area of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres amounted to X ha, approximately reflecting the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a slight contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the harvested area increased by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre production reached the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres decreased by -8.7% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +32.6% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, exports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres plummeted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then fell notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

India represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Sri Lanka (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together comprising a 28% share of total exports. Indonesia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+10.6%), Sri Lanka (+3.3%) and Indonesia (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012-2022. Brazil experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-1.5%) and Vietnam (-2.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Thailand, Sri Lanka and Vietnam saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -4.3% and -5.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X), Sri Lanka ($X) and Brazil ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 73% of global exports. The Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.3%.

Among the main exporting countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +11.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average export price for coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -11.4% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Brazil ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Brazil (+3.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas purchases of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres, when their volume decreased by -14.4% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports of reached the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, imports of coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +55.8% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports of attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

China prevails in fibres structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 60% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by the United States (X tons), committing an 8.4% share of total imports. The UK (X tons), Canada (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Germany (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibre imports into China stood at +2.2%. At the same time, Canada (+7.7%), the United Arab Emirates (+7.6%), the UK (+6.6%), the United States (+3.5%) and Germany (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Canada emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +7.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the Netherlands (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China decreased by -4.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coconut, abaca, ramie and other vegetable textile fibres worldwide, comprising 35% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 10% share of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 9.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+6.9% per year) and the UK (+9.3% per year).
