In 2022, Tanzania (X tons), distantly followed by the United States (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons) and Burkina Faso (X tons) represented the major exporters of coffee substitutes containing coffee, together constituting 42% of total exports. Indonesia (X tons), Nicaragua (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Slovakia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Tanzania increased at an average annual rate of +28.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Burkina Faso (+340.0%), Indonesia (+63.2%), Vietnam (+5.9%), Yemen (+3.2%), the United States (+2.0%) and Ethiopia (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Burkina Faso emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +340.0% from 2012-2022. Nicaragua experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-1.3%), Ghana (-2.6%), Saudi Arabia (-4.0%), the Netherlands (-9.6%) and Slovakia (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Indonesia and Nicaragua increased by +17, +4.6, +4.2 and +4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest coffee substitutes supplier worldwide, comprising 18% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United States ($X), with a 7.4% share of global exports. It was followed by Slovakia, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Tanzania amounted to +34.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United States (+2.6% per year) and Slovakia (-10.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average coffee substitutes export price amounted to $X per ton, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 5.3%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, coffee substitutes imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 30%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Saudi Arabia (X tons), distantly followed by Canada (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the key importers of coffee substitutes containing coffee, together creating 27% of total imports. Myanmar (X tons), France (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Spain (X tons), the UK (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Timor-Leste (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Slovenia (X tons) and Palestine (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Saudi Arabia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of coffee substitutes containing coffee. At the same time, Slovenia (+37.5%), Nigeria (+33.8%), Senegal (+25.5%), Timor-Leste (+13.4%), the Netherlands (+11.7%), Myanmar (+10.8%), the UK (+7.6%), France (+6.2%), Canada (+6.1%) and Namibia (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Slovenia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +37.5% from 2012-2022. Palestine experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Spain (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+3.2 p.p.), the Netherlands (+3.1 p.p.), Myanmar (+2.9 p.p.), Slovenia (+2.7 p.p.), Senegal (+2.6 p.p.), Canada (+2.5 p.p.), Timor-Leste (+2.1 p.p.), France (+1.7 p.p.) and the UK (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Spain saw its share reduced by -9.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Saudi Arabia ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 29% share of global imports. Canada, the UK, Palestine, Spain, Namibia, Slovenia, Timor-Leste, Nigeria, Senegal and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +31.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average coffee substitutes import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a mild decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
