Composite Paperboard Market Size
The global composite paperboard market rose to $X in 2021, growing by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the market value increased by 6.3% against the previous year. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Composite Paperboard Production
In value terms, composite paperboard production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 6.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of composite paper and paperboard, when their volume increased by 9.7% to X tons. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, composite paperboard exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 58% of total exports. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 12% share, followed by Italy (4.7%). The following exporters - the United States (X tons), Spain (X tons), France (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Canada (X tons) - together made up 13% of total exports.
The Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of composite paper and paperboard. At the same time, France (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, France emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +3.0% from 2012-2021. Italy, Germany and the United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Finland (-2.5%), Canada (-3.5%) and Spain (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Netherlands (+5.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Spain saw its share reduced by -1.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest composite paperboard supplier worldwide, comprising 44% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 13% share of global exports. It was followed by the United States, with a 5.7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the Netherlands was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (+0.5% per year) and the United States (+0.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average composite paperboard export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 14% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Finland ($X per ton), while the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+3.6%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Composite Paperboard Imports

In 2021, supplies from abroad of composite paper and paperboard increased by 10% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, composite paperboard imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, the United States (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the largest importers of composite paper and paperboardacross the globe, together resulting at near 23% of total imports. The UK (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 7.4% share, followed by Poland (7.1%), Germany (6.1%) and France (4.8%). Italy (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Czech Republic (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), China (X tons), Mexico (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +8.0%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest composite paperboard importing markets worldwide were the United States ($X), Belgium ($X) and Germany ($X), together comprising 26% of global imports. These countries were followed by the UK, Poland, France, Italy, the Czech Republic, China, Mexico, Spain, the Netherlands and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 39%.
The Czech Republic, with a CAGR of +8.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average composite paperboard import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mexico ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Czech Republic (+4.2%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
