The global construction sands market was estimated at $X in 2022, flattening at the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the global market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, construction sands production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 8.4%. Global production peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of construction sands increased by 1.8% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 196% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, construction sands exports totaled $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The Netherlands was the major exporter of construction sands in the world, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 45% of total exports in 2022. Germany (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Canada (5.7%) and France (5.3%). The following exporters - Mozambique (X tons), China (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) - together made up 7.7% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to construction sands exports from the Netherlands stood at +5.8%. At the same time, Mozambique (+149.0%) and Canada (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +149.0% from 2012-2022. France and Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-8.3%) and China (-16.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the Netherlands and Mozambique increased by +18 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the largest construction sands supplier worldwide, comprising 36% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of global exports. It was followed by Mozambique, with an 11% share.
In the Netherlands, construction sands exports increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Germany (-2.5% per year) and Mozambique (+113.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average construction sands export price amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, enjoyed a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 939% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+12.9%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Construction Sands Imports

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of construction sands decreased by -9.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 96% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, construction sands imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +37.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Singapore (X tons) represented the largest importer of construction sands, constituting 60% of total imports. Belgium (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by the Netherlands (6.8%). The following importers - the United States (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) - together made up 4.5% of total imports.
Imports into Singapore increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+56.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +56.6% from 2012-2022. The United States experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Netherlands (-2.3%) and Belgium (-3.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+37 p.p.) and Thailand (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of the Netherlands (-5.7 p.p.) and Belgium (-16.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported construction sands worldwide, comprising 42% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 12% share of global imports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Singapore stood at +13.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (-1.7% per year) and the Netherlands (-0.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average construction sands import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a slight setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 78% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+2.1%), while the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
