From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brazil (with a CAGR of +1.6%), while production for the other global leaders experienced a decline in the production figures.

The global average cotton lint yield surged to X tons per ha in 2022, rising by 15% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, saw a slight slump. The global yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the global cotton lint harvested area totaled X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 15%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, cotton lint exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, total exports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +48.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 31%. The global exports peaked in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

The United States was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which resulted at 38% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Brazil (X tons), Australia (X tons) and India (X tons), together committing a 37% share of total exports. Benin (X tons), Burkina Faso (X tons), Greece (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Benin (with a CAGR of +12.5%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the largest cotton lint supplier worldwide, comprising 42% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Brazil ($X), with a 17% share of global exports. It was followed by Australia, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United States stood at +3.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (+5.7% per year) and Australia (+1.1% per year).

The average cotton lint export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 26% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The average cotton lint import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average import price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
