Mali, Kenya, Senegal, Ghana, Canada, Cameroon, Sudan and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Sudan (with a CAGR of +17.2%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2022, the global average cow peas yield totaled X kg per ha, approximately mirroring 2021. In general, the yield, however, saw a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The global yield peaked at X kg per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In value terms, cow peas exports reduced to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 17%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. In 2022, Canada (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main exporters of cow peas (dry)across the globe, together constituting 57% of total exports. Uzbekistan (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Madagascar (X tons). All these countries together took near 19% share of total exports. Myanmar (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +113.5%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Canada ($X), the United States ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 79% share of global exports. Myanmar, Madagascar, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 7.6%.
Myanmar, with a CAGR of +102.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average cow peas export price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average export price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Uzbekistan ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Global imports peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cow peas imports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 38% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The United States was the largest importer of cow peas (dry) in the world, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was near 25% of total imports in 2022. Japan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by the Dominican Republic (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons), China (X tons) and India (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 36% share of total imports. Vietnam (X tons), Angola (X tons), Haiti (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Canada (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cow peas imports into the United States stood at +2.9%. At the same time, China (+155.5%), Rwanda (+27.7%), Vietnam (+25.2%), Angola (+17.2%), Haiti (+15.2%), the United Arab Emirates (+9.6%), Japan (+6.5%), Pakistan (+5.2%) and the Dominican Republic (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +155.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Afghanistan (-2.6%), Canada (-5.0%) and India (-17.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of the United States, China, Japan, Vietnam, Rwanda, Angola, Pakistan and Haiti increased by +7.8, +4.9, +4, +3.1, +2.9, +2.7, +2.7 and +2.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cow peas (dry) worldwide, comprising 31% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Dominican Republic ($X), with a 7.4% share of global imports. It was followed by Afghanistan, with a 6.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the United States amounted to +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Dominican Republic (+0.8% per year) and Afghanistan (-1.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average cow peas import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -3.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the average import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
