In value terms, dried onion exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 18%. The global exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
India was the key exporter of dried onions in the world, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 42% of total exports in 2021. The United States (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by China (9.4%), Spain (8.6%) and Egypt (8.5%). France (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to dried onion exports from India stood at +5.9%. At the same time, Spain (+13.2%), China (+4.8%), Belgium (+3.3%) and Egypt (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Spain emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +13.2% from 2012-2021. Germany experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the United States (-1.2%) and France (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, the largest dried onion supplying countries worldwide were India ($X), the United States ($X) and China ($X), together comprising 61% of global exports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Spain, Germany, France and Belgium, which together accounted for a further 28%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +8.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average dried onion export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 9%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 20%. Global imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), Nepal (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), the UK (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Brazil (X tons), Spain (X tons), the United States (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Canada (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) represented roughly 61% of total imports in 2021. Russia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Nepal (with a CAGR of +87.9%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest dried onion importing markets worldwide were Germany ($X), the UK ($X) and the Netherlands ($X), with a combined 24% share of global imports. Japan, Indonesia, the United States, Canada, Brazil, Nepal, Belgium, Russia, Spain and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
Nepal, with a CAGR of +77.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The average dried onion import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average import price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
