Durum Wheat Production

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 5.4%. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, durum wheat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Canada was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 38% of total exports. France (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 10% share, followed by the Czech Republic (7.6%), Poland (6.3%) and Slovakia (5.8%). The following exporters - the United States (X tons), Greece (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons), Russia (X tons), Australia (X tons) and Romania (X tons) - together made up 20% of total exports.

Canada experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of durum wheat. At the same time, Poland (+17.6%), Slovakia (+16.8%), Romania (+12.8%), the Czech Republic (+5.1%), Italy (+4.3%), Spain (+3.6%) and Greece (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Poland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +17.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, the United States (-2.0%), France (-2.4%), Australia (-2.5%), Kazakhstan (-4.4%) and Russia (-14.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Canada (+9.1 p.p.), Poland (+5.3 p.p.), Slovakia (+4.8 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (+3.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Russia (-5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the largest durum wheat supplier worldwide, comprising 38% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Canada amounted to +1.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-0.9% per year) and the Czech Republic (+7.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average durum wheat export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 20% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat export price increased by +66.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Russia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, global imports of durum wheat dropped to X tons, falling by -10.7% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -12.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, durum wheat imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, total imports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +33.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Imports by Country

Egypt was the key importer of durum wheat in the world, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 31% of total imports in 2022. China (X tons) held a 7.1% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Saudi Arabia (6.3%) and Italy (5.1%). Pakistan (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Ecuador (X tons), the United States (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and Lebanon (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Saudi Arabia (+188.4%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+41.9%), Pakistan (+15.9%), Ecuador (+11.7%), Tunisia (+11.2%), China (+10.0%), the United States (+9.2%), Ethiopia (+8.7%) and Italy (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Saudi Arabia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +188.4% from 2012-2022. Lebanon and Jordan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Saudi Arabia (+6.3 p.p.), Pakistan (+3.9 p.p.), China (+3.7 p.p.), Taiwan (Chinese) (+2.9 p.p.), Egypt (+2.4 p.p.), Ecuador (+2.1 p.p.), the United States (+1.7 p.p.) and Tunisia (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2022, the share of Algeria (-1.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In 2022, the average durum wheat import price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 1.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
