The global ethylene market contracted modestly to $X in 2021, approximately mirroring the previous year. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The shipments of the four major exporters of ethylene, namely South Korea, the Netherlands, the United States and Japan, represented more than third of total export. It was distantly followed by Norway (X tons), comprising a 6% share of total exports. The following exporters - Singapore (X tons), Germany (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Belgium (X tons), the UK (X tons), Italy (X tons), China (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) - together made up 28% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +198.7%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Korea ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 39% of global exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Norway, Singapore, Belgium, the UK, Germany, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, China and Italy, which together accounted for a further 42%.

China, with a CAGR of +167.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average ethylene export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in the UK ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton), while the United States ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of ethylene decreased by -1.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 5.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, the largest ethylene importing markets worldwide were China ($X), Belgium ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together accounting for 66% of global imports. These countries were followed by Germany, Taiwan (Chinese), the Netherlands, South Korea, Sweden, France and Spain, which together accounted for a further 25%.

France, with a CAGR of +4.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average ethylene import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible downturn.
