In Guinea, fonio production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Nigeria (+0.6% per year) and Mali (+10.2% per year).

In 2022, the global average fonio yield stood at X kg per ha, remaining stable against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, fonio exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 125%. The global exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, Mali (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Guinea (X tons) was the largest exporter of fonio in the world, creating 87% of total export. It was distantly followed by Burkina Faso (X tons), achieving a 7.2% share of total exports.

France (X tons) and the United States (X tons) represented roughly 56% of total imports in 2022. The Netherlands (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Italy (X tons) and Poland (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 27% share of total imports. In value terms, the United States ($X), France ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 55% share of global imports.

Among the main importing countries, the United States, with a CAGR of +39.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average fonio import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
