The global leather footwear market expanded remarkably to $X in 2021, growing by 5.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a slight curtailment. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leather footwear production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a slight decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 7.8%. Global production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, global leather footwear exports skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 17% against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, leather footwear exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) represented the key exporter of leather footwear, comprising 34% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Belgium (X tons), together generating a 27% share of total exports. Germany (X tons), Portugal (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), Spain (X tons), Poland (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +14.5%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Italy ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 47% of global exports. These countries were followed by Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Turkey, which together accounted for a further 31%.

Among the main exporting countries, Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +19.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average leather footwear export price stood at $X per kg in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average export price increased by 27%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per kg. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per kg), while Turkey ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Bangladesh (+4.5%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Global leather footwear imports expanded remarkably to X tons in 2021, picking up by 10% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a slight descent. Over the period under review, global imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather footwear imports rose markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Global imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and the UK (X tons) represented the main importers of leather footwear, together achieving 47% of total imports. The following importers - China (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons), Spain (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) - together made up 25% of total imports.

Imports into the United States decreased at an average annual rate of -1.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, China (+15.4%), Poland (+13.0%) and Belgium (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +15.4% from 2012-2021. Germany and the Netherlands experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, France (-1.4%), Spain (-1.5%), Japan (-3.0%), Italy (-5.2%), the UK (-6.4%), Russia (-7.3%) and Hong Kong SAR (-16.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Belgium, China and Poland increased by +3.9, +3.3 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest leather footwear importing markets worldwide were the United States ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), together accounting for 38% of global imports. These countries were followed by China, the Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, the UK, Russia, Poland, Spain, Japan and Hong Kong SAR, which together accounted for a further 35%.

China, with a CAGR of +13.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average leather footwear import price amounted to $X per kg, surging by 3.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 5.5%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
