After nine years of growth, the global fuse and detonator market decreased by -3.4% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of safety fuses, detonating fuses and electric detonators was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced decline. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fuse and detonator exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the nine major exporters of safety fuses, detonating fuses and electric detonators, namely the United States, India, Canada, the Czech Republic, South Africa, Peru, Spain, Mexico and France, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Brazil (X tons), China (X tons), Chile (X tons) and Poland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Peru (with a CAGR of +10.0%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), the Czech Republic ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 42% of global exports. Canada, Mexico, South Africa, Spain, India, Chile, Peru, Brazil, China and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 32%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, India, with a CAGR of +11.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average fuse and detonator export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the average export price increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while Peru ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of safety fuses, detonating fuses and electric detonators, when their volume increased by 12% to X tons. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 13%. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the United States (X tons), distantly followed by Mexico (X tons) and Australia (X tons) were the main importers of safety fuses, detonating fuses and electric detonators, together generating 25% of total imports. Turkey (X tons), Chile (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Canada (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Italy (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Peru (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to fuse and detonator imports into the United States stood at -1.1%. At the same time, Italy (+10.1%), Chile (+5.6%), Zimbabwe (+4.6%), the United Arab Emirates (+3.3%) and Kazakhstan (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Italy emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +10.1% from 2012-2021. Australia, Turkey and Peru experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Canada (-1.9%), Mexico (-3.1%), South Africa (-4.3%) and Indonesia (-17.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Chile and Italy increased by +2 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the United States ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported safety fuses, detonating fuses and electric detonators worldwide, comprising 18% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with a 5.6% share of global imports. It was followed by Canada, with a 5.3% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in the United States totaled +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Australia (+1.6% per year) and Canada (+2.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average fuse and detonator import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a slight increase. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Canada ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
