The global groundnuts market fell to $X in 2022, declining by -3.1% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the global market failed to regain momentum.
Groundnuts Production
In value terms, groundnuts production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (X tons), India (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), with a combined 61% share of global production. The United States, Sudan, Senegal, Myanmar, Argentina, Guinea and Chad lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Senegal (with a CAGR of +9.6%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The global average groundnuts yield expanded modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 3.5% against the previous year's figure. Overall, the yield saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 7.8% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the average groundnuts yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the global groundnuts harvested area contracted modestly to X ha, with a decrease of -3.8% compared with 2021 figures. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 8.2% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In 2022, approx. X tons of ground-nut (in-shell) were exported worldwide; with an increase of 4.7% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a notable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 86%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, groundnuts exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -18.9% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 61% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the global exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The United States dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 53% of total exports in 2022. Egypt (X tons) held a 9.2% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by India (6.5%), China (5.5%) and Israel (5.3%). Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Uzbekistan (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from the United States increased at an average annual rate of +11.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+15.1%), Israel (+11.7%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+8.6%), India (+8.6%) and Egypt (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +15.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-3.0%) and China (-10.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the United States (+27 p.p.), Israel (+2.6 p.p.), Uzbekistan (+2.2 p.p.) and India (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-3 p.p.) and China (-19.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the United States ($X) remains the largest groundnuts supplier worldwide, comprising 50% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with an 11% share of global exports. It was followed by China, with a 6.8% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in the United States totaled +8.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+0.6% per year) and China (-10.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average groundnuts export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 5.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 28%. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+9.4%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of ground-nut (in-shell) imported worldwide plummeted to X tons, reducing by -30.5% compared with 2021 figures. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 79%. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, groundnuts imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons) represented the largest importer of ground-nut (in-shell), achieving 36% of total imports. Germany (X tons) held a 9.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Italy (7.7%) and Spain (5.6%). Thailand (X tons), Canada (X tons), Nepal (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), France (X tons) and Trinidad and Tobago (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the ground-nut (in-shell) imports, with a CAGR of +34.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Pakistan (+15.8%), Trinidad and Tobago (+12.0%), Canada (+9.8%), Afghanistan (+7.1%), Germany (+7.0%), Nepal (+6.9%), France (+3.5%), Spain (+2.0%) and Thailand (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Italy experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. China (+35 p.p.), Germany (+5.2 p.p.), Canada (+2.2 p.p.) and Pakistan (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest groundnuts importing markets worldwide were China ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X), together comprising 48% of global imports.
Among the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +37.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the average groundnuts import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 27% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
