Overall, total exports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 82%. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, hand-made lace exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Turkey represented the key exporter of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs in the world, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 46% of total exports in 2022. China (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 20% share, followed by India (12%) and Israel (7.4%). The following exporters - Ghana (X tons) and the United States (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.6% share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +14.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Israel (+36.1%) and Ghana (+21.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +36.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, India (-3.6%), the United States (-5.7%) and China (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Turkey (+33 p.p.), Israel (+7.4 p.p.) and Ghana (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global exports from 2012-2022, the share of the United States (-1.7 p.p.), India (-7.6 p.p.) and China (-23.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) emerged as the largest hand-made lace supplier worldwide, comprising 45% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 22% share of global exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 10% share.

In Turkey, hand-made lace exports expanded at an average annual rate of +13.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (-5.4% per year) and Israel (+34.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average hand-made lace export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -21.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a mild downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 32% against the previous year. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 147% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, hand-made lace imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +62.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The Philippines (X tons) and the United Arab Emirates (X tons) were the largest importers of hand-made lace in the piece, in strips or in motifs in 2022, reaching near 26% and 21% of total imports, respectively. Cambodia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 9.2% share, followed by Myanmar (8.3%) and India (5.8%). The following importers - Tanzania (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +88.4%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest hand-made lace importing markets worldwide were Cambodia ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Tunisia ($X), with a combined 49% share of global imports. The Philippines, India, Egypt, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Cote d'Ivoire and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +58.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average hand-made lace import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -18.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 56%. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
