The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

After three years of growth, shipments abroad of herrings (prepared or preserved) decreased by -5.1% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 9.5%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank in the following year.
In value terms, preserved herring exports stood at $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 8.7% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Poland (X tons), distantly followed by Belarus (X tons), Denmark (X tons), Norway (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Canada (X tons) were the main exporters of herrings (prepared or preserved), together committing 83% of total exports. Lithuania (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Belarus (with a CAGR of +12.3%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest preserved herring supplying countries worldwide were Poland ($X), Belarus ($X) and Denmark ($X), with a combined 58% share of global exports.
Among the main exporting countries, Belarus, with a CAGR of +8.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average preserved herring export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 7.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Lithuania ($X per ton), while Norway ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Lithuania (+1.5%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of herrings (prepared or preserved), when their volume decreased by -4.3% to X tons. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 6.5%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank modestly in the following year.
In value terms, preserved herring imports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Germany (X tons), distantly followed by Russia (X tons), Poland (X tons), Sweden (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main importers of herrings (prepared or preserved), together comprising 71% of total imports. Denmark (X tons), Romania (X tons), Austria (X tons), the UK (X tons), Finland (X tons) and Ukraine (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Russia (with a CAGR of +17.5%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest preserved herring importing markets worldwide were Germany ($X), Russia ($X) and Poland ($X), together comprising 52% of global imports. The United States, Sweden, Austria, Denmark, Romania, Finland, the UK and Ukraine lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.
Romania, with a CAGR of +14.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average preserved herring import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 8.9%. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while Sweden ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
