Mongolia, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Brazil, Argentina, Canada, the United States and Australia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Mongolia (with a CAGR of +8.2%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The global average horse, mule and donkey meat yield shrank modestly to X kg per head in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year's figure. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat exports reduced to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a perceptible descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from Mongolia (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Romania (X tons), Uruguay (X tons), Poland (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Spain (X tons), Italy (X tons), Brazil (X tons), France (X tons) and Canada (X tons), together accounting for 92% of total export.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mongolia (with a CAGR of +20.5%), while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Poland ($X) and Romania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 36% of global exports. Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, Mongolia, the Netherlands, Canada, France, Italy and Brazil lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 57%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Mongolia, with a CAGR of +17.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average export price for horse, mule and donkey meat stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -3.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Global imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, horse, mule and donkey meat imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 17%. Global imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Italy was the main importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 32% of total imports. Belgium (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by France (X tons), Russia (X tons), Japan (X tons), China (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 52% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +37.3%), while purchases for the other global leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, Italy ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported horse, mule and donkey meat worldwide, comprising 37% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 15% share of global imports. It was followed by Japan, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy amounted to +2.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-5.4% per year) and Japan (+4.2% per year).
