In 2021, the global insecticide market decreased by -13.1% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the global market failed to regain momentum.
Insecticide Production
In value terms, insecticide production reduced to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when the production volume increased by 32%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, global production growth remained at a lower figure.
Insecticide Exports

In 2021, approx. X tons of insecticides were exported worldwide; picking up by 5.8% on the previous year. In general, total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +84.5% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
In value terms, insecticide exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +71.0% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China was the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 32% of total exports. India (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by the United States (5.4%). France (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Spain (X tons), the Netherlands (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Israel (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to insecticide exports from China stood at +7.9%. At the same time, India (+12.2%), Israel (+10.5%), Spain (+5.8%), Belgium (+5.0%), Italy (+4.0%), the Netherlands (+3.0%), Argentina (+2.0%) and Indonesia (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +12.2% from 2012-2021. Germany, France, the United States and Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. China (+7 p.p.) and India (+6.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while France and the United States saw its share reduced by -2.1% and -2.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest insecticide supplying countries worldwide were India ($X), China ($X) and the United States ($X), with a combined 44% share of global exports. These countries were followed by France, Germany, Belgium, Israel, Spain, Italy, Indonesia, the Netherlands, Argentina and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 31%.
Israel, with a CAGR of +14.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average insecticide export price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 24%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Argentina ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+7.7%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Insecticide Imports
Imports
In 2021, supplies from abroad of insecticides increased by 3.5% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, insecticide imports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 14% against the previous year. Global imports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Brazil (X tons), distantly followed by the United States (X tons) were the major importers of insecticides, together constituting 17% of total imports. The following importers - Thailand (X tons), France (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Italy (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and India (X tons) - together made up 24% of total imports.
Imports into Brazil increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+17.4%), Indonesia (+10.6%), the United States (+8.9%), Thailand (+7.5%), Nigeria (+6.9%), Ghana (+6.2%), Vietnam (+5.6%), France (+5.3%), India (+1.5%) and Italy (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +17.4% from 2012-2021. Spain experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Philippines (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+1.8 p.p.) and Brazil (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Brazil ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported insecticides worldwide, comprising 19% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 4.8% share of global imports. It was followed by France, with a 4.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Brazil totaled +8.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+6.5% per year) and France (+3.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average insecticide import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 7.4%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
