Production of Iodine, Fluorine And Bromine
In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.
Exports of Iodine, Fluorine And Bromine

In 2021, overseas shipments of iodine, fluorine and bromine increased by 13% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 27%. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine exports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. The global exports peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Israel (X tons) was the largest exporter of iodine, fluorine and bromine, achieving 49% of total exports. Belgium (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Chile (12%), India (7.8%) and Japan (4.5%). The United States (X tons) and Jordan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Israel increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, India (+46.8%), Japan (+6.7%) and the United States (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +46.8% from 2012-2021. Chile experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Belgium (-2.0%) and Jordan (-20.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Israel (+8.4 p.p.), India (+7.5 p.p.), Japan (+2.2 p.p.) and Chile (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Jordan saw its share reduced by -20.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Chile ($X) remains the largest iodine, fluorine and bromine supplier worldwide, comprising 40% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Belgium ($X), with a 15% share of global exports. It was followed by Israel, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Chile stood at -4.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Belgium (+0.2% per year) and Israel (+8.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average iodine, fluorine and bromine export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -11.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Chile ($X per ton), while Israel ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Jordan (+20.1%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Iodine, Fluorine And Bromine
Imports
For the third consecutive year, the global market recorded growth in supplies from abroad of iodine, fluorine and bromine, which increased by 0.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, iodine, fluorine and bromine imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, global imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons) was the major importer of iodine, fluorine and bromine, committing 44% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Belgium (X tons), India (X tons) and France (X tons), together making up a 29% share of total imports. The following importers - Free Zones (X tons), the UK (X tons), the United States (X tons), Norway (X tons), Canada (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to iodine, fluorine and bromine imports into China stood at +11.0%. At the same time, Singapore (+75.1%), Saudi Arabia (+65.3%), Norway (+9.5%), India (+5.3%) and Canada (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +75.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, France (-3.8%), Belgium (-4.1%), the United States (-5.3%), the UK (-7.5%) and Free Zones (-20.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China, India, Singapore and Saudi Arabia increased by +27, +3.6, +2 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iodine, fluorine and bromine worldwide, comprising 31% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with an 11% share of global imports. It was followed by India, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +5.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Belgium (-5.8% per year) and India (-1.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average iodine, fluorine and bromine import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 19%. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Norway ($X per ton), while Saudi Arabia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
