After two years of decline, the global metal chain market increased by 1.8% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the global market reached the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, metal chain production reached $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, the total production indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of iron or steel chain increased by 12% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The global exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, metal chain exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) represented the major exporter of iron or steel chain, making up 48% of total exports. Turkey (X tons) took an 8.9% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United States (6%) and Italy (4.8%). South Korea (X tons), Germany (X tons), Norway (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), India (X tons), Belgium (X tons), Greece (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to metal chain exports from China stood at -3.8%. At the same time, Greece (+24.2%), India (+14.3%), Norway (+7.7%), Turkey (+4.2%), South Africa (+3.2%) and the United States (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Greece emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +24.2% from 2012-2022. Germany and Belgium experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-2.8%), South Korea (-3.0%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-5.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Turkey (+4.7 p.p.), the United States (+2.4 p.p.), Norway (+2 p.p.) and India (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while China saw its share reduced by -2.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest metal chain supplier worldwide, comprising 40% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Italy ($X), with a 9.5% share of global exports. It was followed by Germany, with a 7.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +1.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (+0.4% per year) and Germany (+2.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average metal chain export price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while Greece ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+5.1%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of iron or steel chain were imported worldwide; surging by 2.5% on 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 8.8% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, metal chain imports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 17%. Over the period under review, global imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The UK (X tons), Norway (X tons), the United States (X tons), Spain (X tons), Canada (X tons), Germany (X tons), India (X tons), Japan (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Poland (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Austria (X tons) represented roughly 49% of total imports in 2022. France (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +16.7%), while imports for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported iron or steel chain worldwide, comprising 15% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 5.6% share of global imports. It was followed by the UK, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Japan totaled +6.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the United States (+4.0% per year) and the UK (+7.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average metal chain import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 15%. Global import price peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
