By contrast, Indonesia (-5.0%), the United States (-5.1%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-6.0%), Singapore (-7.4%), Australia (-9.8%) and South Korea (-22.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Japan, Chile, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Panama and Norway increased by +4.8, +4.4, +3.2, +3.1, +1.9 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Japan ($X), Chile ($X) and the Netherlands ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 28% share of global imports. Singapore, the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Norway, Panama, Indonesia, South Korea, Taiwan (Chinese) and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 27%.
Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +10.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
