Laser Market Size

After four years of growth, the global laser market decreased by -8.2% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption, however, posted a significant expansion. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Laser Production

In value terms, laser production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the production volume increased by 182% against the previous year. Global production peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of lasers, other than laser diodes increased by 36% to X units, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports saw a remarkable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The global exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, laser exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 30%. The global exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

South Korea represented the key exporter of lasers, other than laser diodes in the world, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Germany (X units) and China (X units), together generating a 28% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X units), the UK (X units), Japan (X units) and Russia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

South Korea was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lasers, other than laser diodes exports, with a CAGR of +61.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Russia (+20.0%), the UK (+8.8%), China (+7.0%) and Germany (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Japan and Hong Kong SAR experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Korea increased by +53 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest laser supplying countries worldwide were South Korea ($X), Germany ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 59% share of global exports.

Among the main exporting countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +51.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the average laser export price amounted to $X per unit, falling by -10.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a slight setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the average export price increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per unit), while South Korea ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+18.2%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X units of lasers, other than laser diodes were imported worldwide; which is down by -5.9% on the year before. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 39%. Global imports peaked at X units in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, laser imports expanded modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at $X in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Imports by Country

China was the major importing country with an import of about X units, which recorded 46% of total imports. Germany (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Spain (X units). All these countries together held near 14% share of total imports. The following importers - Japan (X units), Italy (X units), Hong Kong SAR (X units), the Netherlands (X units), Belgium (X units), Turkey (X units), South Korea (X units), France (X units) and the UK (X units) - together made up 25% of total imports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lasers, other than laser diodes imports, with a CAGR of +55.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Spain (+32.5%), Belgium (+22.1%), Italy (+7.6%), Germany (+6.7%), the Netherlands (+6.6%), Turkey (+6.4%), France (+4.8%), Hong Kong SAR (+2.2%) and the UK (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Japan (-1.1%) and South Korea (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+44 p.p.), Spain (+4.5 p.p.) and Belgium (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the global imports from 2012-2021, the share of the Netherlands (-1.6 p.p.), the UK (-2.3 p.p.), Hong Kong SAR (-3.9 p.p.), Germany (-4.1 p.p.), Japan (-8.2 p.p.) and South Korea (-10.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lasers, other than laser diodes worldwide, comprising 36% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Germany ($X), with an 11% share of global imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 5.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China totaled +19.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (+9.7% per year) and Japan (+2.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average laser import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight descent. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
