In 2021, the global leather market increased by 8.2% to $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the global market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, continues to indicate a slight descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 11%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, global production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of leather, when their volume increased by 12% to X tons. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the global exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Brazil (X tons) and the United States (X tons) represented roughly 35% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Italy (X tons), constituting an 8.8% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons), China (X tons), Argentina (X tons), Paraguay (X tons), India (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) held a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +9.8%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the largest leather supplier worldwide, comprising 23% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Brazil ($X), with a 9.8% share of global exports. It was followed by China, with a 6.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Italy totaled -3.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Brazil (-4.9% per year) and China (+9.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average leather export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 9.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a slight curtailment. The global export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while Paraguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Leather Imports

In 2021, supplies from abroad of leather increased by 17% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country
China was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 41% of total imports. Italy (X tons) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (9.3%). The following importers - India (X tons), Mexico (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), the United States (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.
China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of leather. At the same time, Cambodia (+16.7%), Vietnam (+4.8%), Indonesia (+2.8%), the United States (+2.5%) and India (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +16.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mexico (-1.2%), Italy (-3.0%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-4.1%), Spain (-5.3%) and Hong Kong SAR (-15.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+4.3 p.p.) and China (+4.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global imports, while Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -6.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X), Italy ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 34% of global imports. Hong Kong SAR, the United States, Indonesia, Mexico, Spain, India, Cambodia and Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +7.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average leather import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 11% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
