Turkey, Nepal, the United States, Bangladesh, China, Russia and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the key producing countries, was attained by Russia (with a CAGR of +17.8%), while production for the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The global average lentil yield rose notably to X tons per ha in 2022, surging by 12% against the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 21%. The global yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 33%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the global exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lentil exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 62%. Over the period under review, the global exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Canada represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which accounted for 46% of total exports. Australia (X tons) took a 26% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Turkey (12%). The following exporters - the United States (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Kazakhstan (X tons) and Russia (X tons) - together made up 11% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Kazakhstan (with a CAGR of +45.9%), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Canada ($X) remains the largest lentil supplier worldwide, comprising 47% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($X), with a 21% share of global exports. It was followed by Turkey, with a 15% share.

In Canada, lentil exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+13.8% per year) and Turkey (+12.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average lentil export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, lentil export price increased by +84.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 28%. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -22.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of global imports remained at a lower figure.

The average lentil import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 9.2% against the previous year. Overall, import price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade.
