Lignite Market Size
The global lignite market declined to $X in 2022, approximately equating the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 4.2%. Global consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Lignite Production
In value terms, lignite production rose significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the production volume increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, global production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
Lignite Exports

In 2022, global lignite exports declined to X tons, with a decrease of -8.7% against 2021. In general, exports, however, saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 63%. Over the period under review, the global exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, lignite exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 125% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then dropped notably in the following year.
Exports by Country
Indonesia represented the main exporter of lignites in the world, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2022. Russia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by the Philippines (7.3%).
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to lignite exports from Indonesia stood at +7.6%. At the same time, Russia (+57.7%) and the Philippines (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Russia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in the world, with a CAGR of +57.7% from 2012-2022. Russia (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the global exports, while Indonesia saw its share reduced by -7.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest lignite supplier worldwide, comprising 68% of global exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Russia ($X), with a 13% share of global exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Indonesia amounted to +6.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Russia (+46.9% per year) and the Philippines (+10.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average lignite export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -17.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the average export price increased by 65%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (-0.6%), while the other global leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Lignite Imports
Imports
In 2022, global lignite imports contracted remarkably to X tons, with a decrease of -18.5% on 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a notable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. Global imports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
In value terms, lignite imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a notable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 60% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
Imports by Country
China dominates imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 92% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Serbia (X tons) and Uzbekistan (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.3% share of total imports.
Imports into China increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Uzbekistan (+22.6%) and Serbia (+16.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Uzbekistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the world, with a CAGR of +22.6% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Uzbekistan and Serbia increased by +2 and +1.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported lignites worldwide, comprising 89% of global imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Serbia ($X), with a 2.9% share of global imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +4.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Serbia (+16.6% per year) and Uzbekistan (+23.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average lignite import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 47% against the previous year. Global import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Serbia ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Serbia (+0.4%).
